Springfield, IL – A tornado watch has been issued for more than 50 counties across Illinois, remaining in effect until 9 p.m. CDT Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center.
The affected areas include central and northern Illinois, covering counties such as Sangamon, Peoria, McLean, Champaign, and Rock Island. Residents in these regions should prepare for severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail.
According to the Storm Prediction Center, atmospheric conditions are favorable for the development of strong tornadoes. Wind gusts exceeding 60 mph and hail larger than one inch in diameter are also possible. The watch extends from western Illinois near Mercer County to eastern sections including Vermilion County.
Authorities urge residents to stay alert and monitor local weather updates. The safest course of action during a tornado warning is to seek shelter in a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Mobile homes and vehicles offer little protection from tornadoes.
This developing weather situation may cause travel disruptions and power outages. The NWS recommends keeping emergency supplies on hand, including flashlights, water, and a battery-powered weather radio. Stay tuned to local news outlets for the latest updates.
