Effingham, Illinois – A Tornado Warning is in effect until 7:30 p.m. CST Thursday for parts of Clay, Jasper, and Effingham counties as a radar-indicated storm moves east at 35 mph.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, the severe thunderstorm was located near Bible Grove at 6:38 p.m., about 13 miles south of Effingham, and is capable of producing a tornado and quarter-size hail up to 1.00 inch in diameter.

Take cover now.

Communities in southwestern Jasper County, north central Clay County, and southeastern Effingham County — including Bogota — could see rapidly changing road conditions as the storm advances. Drivers along U.S. Route 45 and nearby rural highways may encounter sudden visibility drops and hail-covered pavement before 7:30 p.m.

Mobile homes are especially vulnerable in this storm.

Flying debris may damage roofs, windows, and vehicles within minutes of arrival. Tree damage is likely along the storm’s path as it tracks east.

Residents should move to a basement or interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and avoid windows. Those outdoors or in vehicles must seek substantial shelter immediately.

The storm will continue east through 7:30 p.m. CST. The Tornado Warning remains in effect for the listed counties until that time.
