Champaign, IL – A tornado warning is in effect for southern Champaign and northwestern Douglas counties until 2 p.m. CDT Sunday as a fast-moving storm system sweeps across east central Illinois.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, the warning was issued at 1:26 p.m. after radar detected rotation within a severe thunderstorm near Sadorus, approximately 9 miles north of Tuscola. The storm is moving northeast at 55 mph and poses a risk of producing a tornado and quarter-size hail.
Communities at immediate risk include Tolono, Willard Airport, Pesotum, Savoy, Urbana, Philo, and Sidney. Residents in these areas are urged to seek shelter in a basement or interior room away from windows. The storm may cause flying debris, damage to roofs, vehicles, and trees, and pose a significant threat to mobile homes.
The tornado warning affects travel along key interstates, including I-57 (mile markers 216–239), I-72 (181–182), and I-74 (178–185).
Residents should monitor NOAA weather radios, local media, or trusted weather apps for real-time updates. Be prepared to take immediate action if warnings are extended or upgraded.
