Springfield, Illinois – Severe thunderstorms could impact parts of Central Illinois through Friday evening, with the highest risk tonight east of I-55 and shifting south of I-72 by Friday. Wind gusts up to 45 mph may lead to blowing dust and increased fire danger in open fields.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, storm chances tonight range from 20–40% east of I-55, while Friday’s risk jumps to 40–70% for areas east and south. Winds will be especially gusty both tonight and Friday, with southwest gusts reaching 35–45 mph.

Communities in Macon, Effingham, and Shelby counties should stay alert for rapid storm development and possible warnings. Travelers on I-57 and U.S. 51 could encounter brief whiteouts or debris during peak gusts. Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items and avoid burning outdoors due to fire spread risks.

Temperatures will dip slightly by Saturday, with highs in the 70s and drier air returning. By Sunday, calmer and less humid conditions are expected across the region.

Severe weather risks continue through Friday night. Stay tuned for further advisories and updates from the NWS.
