Aurora, Illinois – Heavy morning storms are slamming areas along and south of I-88 today, triggering flash flood concerns and possible downed limbs as the first of two storm rounds targets northern Illinois.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, thunderstorms began developing around 6 a.m. Saturday and will persist through noon, focusing on cities including Aurora, Naperville, Joliet, and DeKalb. The primary threats include torrential downpours capable of flooding roads and basements, along with winds strong enough to snap tree limbs.

Travel on I-88 and nearby roads may be hazardous, especially in low-lying areas. Officials urge drivers not to attempt to cross flooded roads. Commuters should have multiple ways to receive weather alerts as storms may redevelop quickly.

Residents should secure outdoor furniture and avoid unnecessary morning travel. Rainfall rates could exceed an inch per hour in the heaviest cells, causing rapid creek and stream rises.

Storms are expected to weaken by midday, but a stronger second round is likely this afternoon south of I-80.
