Chicago, Illinois – Scattered thunderstorms could disrupt travel and outdoor plans across northern Illinois today as a line of storms develops from mid-morning through late evening. The National Weather Service warns that the strongest storms may bring damaging winds and frequent lightning between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. CDT.

According to the NWS Chicago office, the heaviest storm coverage is expected from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., with the greatest impact centered on areas from Rockford to Chicago, including Joliet, Elgin, and Valparaiso. Some localized flooding is possible, especially east of I-55 where soaking downpours could overwhelm low-lying roads.

All thunderstorms today may bring gusty winds, intense rain, and lightning. The strongest cells could knock down tree limbs or briefly cut power. Storms are expected to move east at around 30 mph, impacting evening commutes. Residents should use caution on wet roads and avoid driving through water-covered intersections.

With heat and humidity returning for the July 4th holiday, today’s storms mark a transition in the pattern. Be sure to have multiple ways to receive warnings and remain weather-aware through tonight.
