Chicago, Illinois – Evening plans in the Chicago metro area and northwest Indiana could be disrupted by scattered thunderstorms beginning as early as 5 p.m. Thursday, with the strongest storms expected between 7 p.m. and midnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, isolated to scattered storms will sweep through the region from the west, carrying threats of gusty winds, localized downpours, and lightning. A strong thunderstorm or two may develop, potentially producing small hail or wind gusts strong enough to down tree limbs or damage power lines.
The areas most likely to be affected include Chicago, Gary, Aurora, Joliet, and surrounding suburbs. While the risk remains scattered, the evening commute and early nighttime activities could be impacted by sudden weather changes.
Residents are advised to monitor the radar and have severe weather alerts enabled on their devices. If thunder roars, head indoors immediately, and avoid outdoor plans during the storm window.
Storms are expected to move southeast at around 40 mph. Additional updates will be issued if storm intensity increases or new warnings are needed.
