Chicago, IL – A wave of scattered thunderstorms across northern Illinois today may cause localized flooding due to torrential downpours, warns the National Weather Service in Chicago.

The severe weather, expected from 1 to 10 PM CDT, could also see lightning strikes and soaking rainfalls particularly affecting low-lying areas. Residents are advised to avoid flooded roads and report any flooding to local authorities.

The storms follow the region’s warmest Mother’s Day since 2005, with temperatures yesterday reaching the mid-80s. The coming days will see a brief cooldown, with temperatures dipping to the 50s by Tuesday before gradually warming midweek.
