Wheaton, IL – Illinois drivers heading out for Thanksgiving travel this week will see an increase in DUI patrols, seat-belt checks, and traffic enforcement as agencies across the state begin their annual holiday safety crackdown. The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday that it is participating in statewide campaigns aimed at reducing impaired driving and encouraging seat-belt use.

According to the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, the enforcement period runs from Nov. 21 to Dec. 2, overlapping with one of the busiest travel weeks of the year. Deputies will be watching for seat-belt violations, speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving involving alcohol or drugs, including cannabis.

“Thanksgiving brings more vehicles, longer trips and more festivities,” Sheriff James Mendrick said in the release. He emphasized that wearing a seat belt remains one of the easiest and most effective ways to prevent serious injuries in a crash. The agency is urging all drivers and passengers to buckle up every trip, and to plan a sober ride before celebrations begin. “If you drink alcohol or use cannabis, don’t drive,” Mendrick said.

The Sheriff’s Office also offered several safety tips for holiday travelers:

• Choose a sober driver or use a taxi, public transit, or rideshare service before going out.
• If hosting a gathering, offer alcohol-free options and help guests arrange safe transportation.
• Avoid driving after cannabis use, as effects can impair reaction time and judgment.
• Report impaired drivers by pulling over safely and calling 911.
• Ensure everyone in the vehicle wears a seat belt, including back-seat passengers.

The campaign is supported by federal traffic safety funds administered through the Illinois Department of Transportation.
