Downers Grove, IL – A 17-year-old male from Colorado has been charged in connection with an armed robbery that occurred last month in downtown Downers Grove.
According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, the juvenile—reportedly a Venezuelan migrant with a last known address in Denver—was extradited to Illinois on May 16 to face a Class X felony charge of Armed Robbery with a Firearm. The alleged incident took place around 8:37 p.m. on April 22 in the 4900 block of Forest Avenue, where a woman was reportedly held at gunpoint and robbed of approximately $110 while walking alone.
Authorities stated that the victim was approached by four individuals. One, later identified as the accused juvenile, allegedly brandished a handgun and demanded money while another suspect reportedly took the woman’s purse. The group then fled the scene. The investigation led law enforcement to the juvenile in Colorado, and an arrest warrant was issued on May 7.
The teen appeared before Judge Kishori Tank in a detention hearing Friday and was ordered held until at least his next court date, set for May 22.
DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin emphasized the collaborative effort involved in locating and extraditing the suspect. “Armed violence, as alleged in this case, is not who we are in DuPage County,” Berlin said. “Our strong response to those who choose to test our resolve shows our commitment to safety.”
Police Chief Michael DeVries also praised the Downers Grove Police Department and other agencies for their roles in the investigation and capture of the juvenile. The firearm allegedly used in the robbery was recovered during the investigation.
Officials remind the public that the charges are allegations and the juvenile is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
