Chicago, Illinois – Scattered storms and sweltering heat will bring hazards to much of northern Illinois by Wednesday afternoon, with travel risks and localized flooding possible.
According to the National Weather Service, thunderstorms are expected across the Chicago area after 2 p.m. CDT Wednesday, with a 50% chance of rain and damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph. A Level 1 severe thunderstorm risk remains in place, particularly south of I-80, where heat index values may soar to 105°F. Flash flooding is also a concern in low-lying or poorly drained areas.
Drivers along I-55 and I-80 should monitor conditions closely and avoid water-covered roads. Lightning and gusty winds may down tree limbs and power lines during peak afternoon commute hours.
Wednesday’s high will reach 72°F near the lakefront but climb sharply inland, hitting the upper 80s by Thursday and Friday. By the weekend, temps near 90°F return, with daily storm chances keeping skies unsettled.
Spotters may be needed Wednesday afternoon and evening if storms intensify, NWS noted. Storm motion is northeast at 30 mph.
