Illinois Storms Spawn Tornadoes Monday, Shut Down Highways, Airport, and Refinery

Chicago, IL – Severe weather swept through the Chicago area Monday night, bringing tornadoes, powerful winds, and heavy rain that shut down major transportation routes and caused widespread damage.

A ground stop was issued for O’Hare International Airport, and Metra trains on several lines were halted as wind gusts exceeding 80 mph battered the region. According to the US National Weather Service Central Illinois, numerous reports of wind damage and fallen trees were received from across the area.

Interstate 55 was closed in both directions between US Rt. 6 and Lorenzo Rd. due to downed power lines, causing significant traffic disruptions. Frontage roads on both sides of the interstate were also affected, with access restricted to northbound traffic from US Rt. 6 and Bluff Rd.

According to the Manhattan Fire Protection District, a large area of Manhattan Township, including Ranch Oaks Subdivision, experienced severe weather with downed power lines and trees. ComEd has been notified of power outages, and residents are advised to avoid downed power lines and fallen trees. No injuries to civilians or firefighters have been reported.

The storm caused extensive damage throughout the region. The Mokena Police Department reported a busy night for first responders, including the discovery of an unresponsive man near 191st Street and LaGrange Road. Paramedics and the Will County Coroner’s office responded, and an investigation is ongoing.

Further south, major power lines fell near the ExxonMobil plant, causing power loss and flaring, according to the Village of Elwood. The plant’s flare stacks released due to the power outage, creating a noticeable odor in the area. Officials are working to quell the odor and restore power.

The Braidwood Fire Department reported Route 113 east of town was impassable due to downed trees, urging residents to stay home while crews clear the debris. Crown Point Fire Rescue also noted that South Street was blocked between Maple and Indiana Avenues due to downed trees and power lines, with extensive power outages reported. NIPSCO crews are working to restore power, but extended delays are expected.

Frankfort Police Department advised residents to exercise caution while driving due to multiple reports of downed trees and debris. The department of public works is actively clearing roads, and residents are urged to drive slowly and anticipate road obstructions.

Authorities across the affected areas continue to work on restoring power and clearing roads. Residents are advised to stay home and avoid traveling unless necessary. Emergency services are on high alert, responding to incidents as they arise and ensuring public safety amid the aftermath of the severe weather.
