Illinois Storms: Rockford Records 6.5 Inches of Rain in Heavy Downpour Saturday

Rockford, IL – Severe weather struck northern Illinois from Saturday night, bringing significant flash flooding and damage to multiple areas. Rockford experienced 4 to 6.5 inches of rain, leading to substantial flooding throughout the city. The National Weather Service reported that training thunderstorms were responsible for the intense rainfall.

According to the National Weather Service, a second wave of storms passed through during the morning of July 14th, producing a microburst in Joliet that caused additional damage. Rockford recorded the highest rainfall totals, with Rockford 3 WNW receiving 6.30 inches and Rockford 2 ENE receiving 6.24 inches. These intense rainfalls led to significant flash flooding, impacting homes, roads, and infrastructure.

Flash flooding was observed throughout Rockford, with water levels rising rapidly and inundating streets and properties. The Rockford Fire Department provided a photo showing the extent of the flooding. In Joliet, the microburst resulted in structural damage and power outages, compounding the region’s challenges.
