Springfield, Ill. – Scattered storms could disrupt afternoon and evening plans across central and southeast Illinois Monday, while heat indices push into the mid-90s, making it one of the hottest days of the month so far.
According to the National Weather Service in Central Illinois, showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected through tonight with a 40% chance of precipitation. High temperatures will reach the upper 80s Monday but feel hotter due to elevated humidity. A noticeable shift arrives Tuesday as a high-pressure system moves in, reducing humidity and dropping heat indices into more comfortable territory.
Cities including Decatur, Champaign, and Mattoon can expect daytime highs in the mid-80s to low 90s through Friday, with cooler mornings in the 60s. Tuesday through Thursday looks mostly dry, with sunshine and a drier airmass prevailing. Friday may bring a slight (20%) chance of showers again.
Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours Monday, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable individuals. Roadways may become slick during isolated downpours.
Conditions are expected to remain seasonally warm through the holiday week. The next weather briefing will follow if storm chances increase later in the week.
