Springfield, Illinois – Tornadoes, damaging wind gusts, and large hail could strike parts of Illinois this afternoon, with severe storms likely between 3 and 9 p.m. Friday across the central and southern portions of the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, strong to severe thunderstorms will develop by mid-afternoon, especially over central Illinois, before shifting east toward Indiana by evening. The highest risk (Level 4 of 5) stretches from Effingham to Lawrenceville, with large hail and isolated tornadoes possible. Areas including Springfield, Decatur, and Champaign fall under a Level 3 risk, with storms capable of producing 60 to 70 mph winds.
Meanwhile, dry air and strong southerly winds are creating dangerous fire weather conditions. Gusts could reach 45 mph this afternoon, with relative humidity dropping to near 20% in parts of western and central Illinois. The combination raises the risk for blowing dust and wildfires, particularly west of Bloomington and Peoria.
Residents are urged to review safety plans, avoid open flames, and secure loose outdoor items. Stay off the roads if storms intensify and charge devices in case of power outages.
Severe weather warnings remain in effect through Friday night, with additional alerts possible as storms move eastward.
