Springfield, IL – Romance scams are on the rise, with millions falling victim to fraudulent schemes targeting online daters. The Illinois State Police issued a warning Monday, urging residents to remain vigilant, especially those new to online platforms.
According to the agency, scammers often attempt to move relationships quickly, request money via unconventional means like gift cards or cryptocurrency, and avoid in-person meetings. Other red flags include sending suspicious links, isolating victims from friends or family, and requesting explicit content or private communication through apps like WhatsApp or Telegram.
Victims are advised to report scams to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and notify financial institutions if monetary losses occur.
