Posen, IL – An Illinois State Police (ISP) trooper sustained serious injuries Thursday night after being struck by an alleged intoxicated driver during a traffic stop on Interstate 57.

According to ISP, the incident occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. near 135th Street when the trooper activated emergency lights and pulled over a vehicle. While standing beside the passenger side of the stopped car, a Hyundai SUV failed to move over, sideswiped the squad car, and collided with the stopped vehicle. The impact pushed the stopped car into the trooper, forcing them into a roadside ditch.

Both the trooper and the driver of the pulled-over vehicle were injured. The Hyundai driver, 56-year-old Ricky D. Jordon of Chicago, was charged with Aggravated Driving Under the Influence and driving without a valid license. ISP reported that an additional charge for violating the Move Over Law, or Scott’s Law, is pending.

This marks the 24th Scott’s Law-related crash involving ISP in 2024, surpassing last year’s total of 21. ISP urges drivers to comply with the Move Over Law, which mandates slowing down and changing lanes for emergency or disabled vehicles displaying lights.

Violators face steep fines and potential license suspension. More information about Scott’s Law is available here.
