Galatia, IL – An Illinois State Police squad car was struck early Friday while troopers were securing a fatal crash scene on Illinois 34 in Saline County.
According to Illinois State Police, the incident occurred at approximately 5:08 a.m. Friday about one mile west of Harco Road. Two troopers were parked with emergency lights activated, blocking westbound traffic when a westbound Ford Escape allegedly struck the rear of one of the squad cars. Both troopers were outside their vehicles and were not injured.
The driver of the Ford Escape, identified as 66-year-old Sandra S. Kahl of Thompsonville, was uninjured and cited for alleged violations of Illinois’ Move Over Law and Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident.
Friday’s crash marks the eighth Move Over Law-related incident involving Illinois State Police in 2025. In 2024, state police recorded 27 such crashes, resulting in 12 trooper injuries and one death. In 2023, there were 21 crashes with seven troopers injured.
Illinois’ Move Over Law, also known as “Scott’s Law,” requires drivers to change lanes, if possible, or slow down when approaching emergency vehicles or any vehicle with flashing emergency or hazard lights. Violators face fines ranging from $250 to $10,000 for a first offense. If the violation results in injury, a driver’s license suspension of six months to two years is mandatory.
Authorities are again urging motorists to follow the Move Over Law to protect first responders and others working along roadways.
