Springfield, IL – With a winter storm forecast to impact central Illinois tonight into Saturday, state officials are reminding motorists they can report certain vehicle crashes online rather than in person.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service Central Illinois, accumulating snow and slick road conditions may develop across several counties through the weekend, potentially affecting post-Thanksgiving travel and shopping plans. The Illinois State Police (ISP) are urging drivers to avoid unnecessary travel and check conditions before heading out.

According to ISP, single-vehicle, property-damage-only crashes that occur on Illinois Interstates or U.S./Illinois Routes — and involve no injuries — can be reported using the Illinois State Police Online Crash Reporting Application. The portal allows motorists to complete official reports without waiting for law enforcement at the scene.

However, two-vehicle crashes, injury-related accidents, or those involving uninsured property damage over $500 must still be reported in person. The online reporting system is meant to streamline minor, non-injury incidents and keep troopers available for emergency responses during severe weather.

Drivers can file reports at isp.illinois.gov/CrashReports/CrashReportDisclaimer and are encouraged to check travel updates at gettingaroundillinois.com before departing.

With snow expected to make highways slick overnight, ISP reminds drivers to slow down, increase following distance, and stay alert for black ice through Saturday.
