Channahon, Illinois – As spring settles in across Illinois, residents may notice more coyotes active during the day—especially in neighborhoods near wooded areas and trails.
According to the Channahon Police Department, April and May mark coyote pup season, when adult coyotes spend more time foraging to feed their young. Sightings during daylight hours don’t mean the animals are sick, just that they’re being protective and resourceful parents.
In areas like Channahon and across DuPage and Will counties, some coyotes may “escort” hikers or walkers—a non-aggressive behavior intended to steer people away from dens. Officials urge residents to stay calm and give the animals space if encountered.
Coyotes are vital to local ecosystems, helping control rodent populations. They rarely pose a danger to people, but police advise against feeding them or attempting to interact.
Wildlife experts say awareness is key this season: enjoy the outdoors, but stay alert, especially near forest preserves and nature trails.
Coyote pup season typically winds down by early June, but activity may remain elevated through the end of May.
