Chicago, IL – The city is gearing up for one of its most anticipated summer charity events as the Special Olympics Illinois Ducky Derby returns to downtown Chicago on Thursday, August 7, 2025. Thousands are expected to flock to the Chicago River for a day of festivities, family fun, and the signature rubber duck race that helps support Special Olympics athletes across the state.

According to event organizers, the Derby Festival will kick off at 10 a.m. at Pioneer Court, located at 401 N. Michigan Avenue. The festival will feature a range of activities and entertainment, including a dunk tank, balloon artist, face painting, and live music by DJ MH2DA. Food trucks such as 5411 Empanadas, Kona Ice, The Fat Shallot, and Travelin’ Tom’s Coffee will also be onsite.

At noon, attendees can join the Northman Watch Party at 233 E. Riverwalk before heading over to the Columbus Drive Bridge at 1 p.m. for the main event: the splashdown of thousands of rubber ducks into the river. Each adopted duck represents a chance to win prizes while raising funds for Special Olympics Illinois.

The Ducky Derby is sponsored by a wide range of local businesses and organizations, including Jewel-Osco, ESPN, iHeart, Rockit, and more. As of today, over 63,000 ducks have already been adopted, raising more than $329,000 toward the 2025 fundraising goal of $80,000 adopted ducks.

Ducks can be adopted in packages ranging from a single duck for $10 to the Diamond Duck Pack of 240 ducks for $1,200, with proceeds directly benefiting Special Olympics Illinois.
