Chicago, IL – Snow continues across northeast Illinois this morning, bringing accumulations of up to one inch on untreated surfaces. Travel conditions are expected to worsen as lake-effect snow showers develop this afternoon, primarily impacting areas near I-94 and I-80.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snow showers will transition to lake-effect snow by late morning near Lake Michigan, with increased snowfall and reduced visibility likely into the evening. Northwest Indiana will also experience accumulating snow, potentially creating slick conditions along I-65 overnight.

Drivers should exercise caution, as untreated roads will become icy, particularly in lake-effect zones. Gusty winds reaching up to 25 mph may further reduce visibility, complicating travel. Commuters are advised to allow extra time for trips, maintain safe following distances, and monitor updates from the NWS.

The extended forecast predicts clearer skies by Saturday, with highs reaching the mid-20s but lows plunging to single digits. Sunday will remain dry, with temperatures hovering in the low 30s. However, the start of next week brings a shift, as rain is expected Monday and Tuesday, primarily south of I-80.

Local residents should prepare for fluctuating conditions over the weekend, ensuring vehicles are equipped for winter weather and staying informed on road conditions.
