Springfield, IL – Fifty-three Illinois students have been awarded scholarships to attend the Cebrin Goodman Teen Institute (CGTI), a statewide youth leadership program focused on prevention, leadership development and community impact.
According to the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association (ISA), the scholarships funded student participation in the 51st annual CGTI event, held July 13–17 at Eastern Illinois University. The program, hosted by the Illinois Association for Behavioral Health, brings together middle school and high school students from across Illinois to learn strategies for leadership, substance use prevention, mental health awareness and peer collaboration.
Students engaged in a week of workshops, keynote sessions and team-building exercises designed to prepare them for leadership roles in their schools and communities. ISA officials said the scholarships ensured that participants from diverse backgrounds were able to take part in the experience, which many students described as life-changing.
Jim Kaitschuk, executive director of the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association, said the initiative underscores the group’s commitment to supporting young leaders. “These young leaders are the future of Illinois, and we are proud to invest in their growth and commitment to making a difference,” Kaitschuk said.
The program will continue with a mid-year event January 17–18, 2026, in Bloomington-Normal, where students will reconvene to review their action plans, reconnect with peers and continue their leadership development.
ISA, founded in 1928, represents Illinois sheriffs across the state, supporting law enforcement professionals while enhancing public safety and investing in community-based programs.
