Carlyle, IL – Authorities in Clinton County say a suspect is in custody after hidden video recording devices were discovered inside portable bathrooms at the St. Rose Church Picnic.
According to the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were alerted on Saturday to two devices found in restroom facilities on the north side of the St. Rose School gymnasium. Detectives launched an immediate investigation to identify those allegedly responsible for what officials called a “gross violation of privacy.”
Sheriff Dan Travous said the arrest was made late Monday afternoon, but due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, only limited information could be released. Travous explained that the delay in announcing the arrest was to prevent the suspect from possibly fleeing the area.
Investigators confirmed that the data from the devices was never transferred, accessed, or viewed by anyone outside law enforcement. Due to very dark lighting conditions inside the portable bathrooms, the sheriff said the footage was of poor quality, and no individuals could be recognized.
Officials have not disclosed how long the devices were active but said they hope to release that information in the coming days. The sheriff noted that detectives are continuing to gather evidence to present to the state attorney’s office for prosecution.
Travous thanked the public for its patience and emphasized the department’s commitment to protecting the community’s privacy and safety.
