Chicago, IL – A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for parts of northern and western Illinois, remaining in effect until 2 a.m. CDT on Saturday. The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center (SPC) warns of potential damaging winds, large hail, and the possibility of isolated tornadoes.
According to the SPC, the watch includes 27 counties across Illinois, including Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, and Will. Areas such as Rock Island, McHenry, and LaSalle are also under the advisory. Residents are advised to remain vigilant as storms move through the region.
The storms are expected to develop and intensify throughout Friday evening, bringing heavy rainfall, strong wind gusts, and frequent lightning. Some areas could experience wind speeds exceeding 60 mph, with hail potentially reaching up to an inch in diameter.
Officials urge residents to secure outdoor objects, seek shelter indoors during severe weather, and have a way to receive weather alerts overnight. If a warning is issued, taking immediate precautions is crucial.
This severe weather comes amid fluctuating temperatures in the Midwest, with unseasonably warm conditions preceding the storm system. Forecasters advise monitoring updates from the National Weather Service and local emergency management agencies for the latest information and safety recommendations.
