Illinois Severe Weather Update: EF1 Tornado Hits Coles County With 110 MPH Winds

Rardin, IL – The National Weather Service (NWS) has confirmed that an EF1 tornado touched down near Rardin in Coles County on March 19, producing peak winds of 110 mph and causing structural damage.

According to the NWS Central Illinois office, the tornado was on the ground for approximately two minutes, from 4:52 to 4:54 p.m. CDT, with a path length of 0.71 miles and a maximum width of 50 yards. No injuries or fatalities were reported.

Survey results indicate that the tornado caused structural damage near the start of its track, just west of the intersection of county roads 1600N and 2000E. A farm outbuilding was destroyed, and siding was torn off a nearby house.

Additional storm surveys are being conducted across Illinois, including areas from the Illinois River Valley east to near I-39. Officials have stated that results from those assessments will be released soon.

Residents are advised to stay informed about severe weather warnings and have a safety plan in place. March marks the beginning of peak tornado season in Illinois, and preparedness is key to minimizing risks.
