Chicago, IL – Drivers, homeowners, and outdoor workers across northern Illinois should prepare for scattered severe storms capable of producing 70 mph winds and large hail starting at 4 p.m. Friday, with the highest risk expected east of I-55.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, the storm threat will persist through 10 p.m., bringing the potential for downed tree limbs, power outages, and hail damage—particularly in areas from Joliet and Kankakee to Valparaiso. A Level 1 severe weather threat is in place for much of the region, with a heightened risk extending into central Illinois.
Wind gusts throughout the day could reach up to 45 mph, contributing to an elevated fire danger due to dry conditions and unseasonably warm temperatures near 89°F. Fire officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and secure lightweight objects.
The strongest storms may develop rapidly and track northeast at 50 mph. Residents in Chicago, Waukegan, and Kankakee should remain weather-aware and have multiple alert systems in place.
Storms are expected to taper off late this evening, but more rain and storm chances are possible early next week. Warnings remain in effect through tonight.
