Chicago, Illinois – Severe storms are expected to develop across northern Illinois Tuesday afternoon, with the highest threat for tornadoes and damaging winds focused south of I-80 from roughly 2 to 8 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, the greatest risk zone stretches from La Salle to Rensselaer, where scattered thunderstorms could produce damaging hail, wind gusts strong enough to down trees, and a few tornadoes. The agency warns that the location of a warm front remains uncertain — if it shifts northward, the severe weather risk could expand closer to I-80 or beyond.

Communities including Kankakee, Pontiac, and Watseka are currently in the highest risk zone, with Level 2 (slight) to Level 3 (enhanced) severe weather levels expected. Meanwhile, cities farther north such as Joliet, DeKalb, and even parts of Chicago should remain alert in case storm conditions intensify or shift.

Residents are urged to have multiple ways to receive alerts and avoid outdoor travel during peak storm hours. Charge mobile devices in advance, and secure any outdoor objects that could become hazardous in strong winds.

More updates are expected later today as forecasters monitor the warm front’s movement. Warnings may be issued with little notice.
