Aurora, IL – A virtual session promoting brain health equity for seniors was temporarily disrupted Monday after a targeted Zoom bombing incident halted the event, according to organizers.

According to AgeGuide Northeastern Illinois, the event—Equity in Brain Health: Advancing Support for Diverse Communities & Caregivers—was interrupted by an unauthorized intruder who shared offensive content. A review by the agency’s IT provider found the attack was likely the work of a lone individual.

Zoom bombing refers to cyber intrusions where uninvited participants disrupt online events with inappropriate visuals, loud audio, or offensive chat messages. Though originally associated with Zoom, such intrusions can occur on any video conferencing platform.

The incident has been reported to Zoom’s Trust and Safety team and to law enforcement. AgeGuide said it is cooperating fully with ongoing investigations and encouraged other organizations to work with their IT teams to safeguard their own virtual events.

“Just as victims of scams are not at fault, we refuse to be intimidated or silenced by an incident that, unfortunately, has become increasingly common in virtual spaces,” said Marla Fronczak, CEO of AgeGuide, in a public statement.

AgeGuide serves seniors and caregivers across northeastern Illinois and is enhancing its security measures to ensure future events remain protected and inclusive. Despite the disruption, the organization pledged to continue its work in advancing brain health equity and support systems for diverse aging communities.
