Chicago, IL – A 70-year-old woman from Rockford has been charged in federal court following a weekend protest outside an immigration enforcement facility in Broadview, Illinois.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois, Dana Briggs, 70, is accused of felony assault on a federal officer after allegedly making physical contact with an agent’s arm. Prosecutors said the incident occurred as agents worked to extend a safety perimeter outside the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) building Saturday evening.

Briggs is one of five individuals charged in connection with the confrontation. Other defendants, ranging in age from 21 to 41, allegedly grabbed agents’ equipment, resisted arrest, and in some cases were found carrying loaded firearms.

Federal officials stressed that law enforcement officers must be able to perform their duties without interference. “The FBI is committed to bringing swift and decisive action against anyone who seeks to bring harm to federal law enforcement,” said Lucas Rothaar, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Chicago Field Office.

All defendants made their initial court appearances Monday in Chicago. Prosecutors noted that a criminal complaint is not evidence of guilt, and all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
