Kankakee, IL – As the school year begins across Illinois, authorities are reminding drivers about the critical importance of school bus safety, especially with new video cameras installed to enforce traffic laws. Drivers need to be aware of the steep penalties associated with passing a stopped school bus.
In Illinois, the minimum fine for passing a stopped school bus with its extended stop arm is $300 for a first offense, plus court costs. The driver’s license will also be suspended for three months. If a second offense occurs within five years, the fine increases to at least $1,000, and the driver’s license suspension extends to one year. Drivers convicted of passing a stopped school bus are not eligible for court supervision.
Other penalties may include mandatory traffic safety school, community service, and the accumulation of 25 points on the driver’s license, which could raise insurance premiums. Drivers are reminded to stop until the bus retracts its stop arm, the flashing lights go off, or the bus driver signals them to proceed. Local authorities urge caution to protect student safety and avoid severe penalties.
