Vernon Hills, IL – Police are warning residents across Lake County to be cautious of imposter scams after a rise in reports of fraudulent phone calls this week.
According to the Vernon Hills Police Department, scammers are spoofing caller ID to make it appear as though calls are coming from government agencies or law enforcement. One recent case involved a resident receiving a call from someone claiming to be an “immigration service officer.” The caller allegedly demanded payment, but the resident hung up before losing money.
Police say these scams often pressure victims by threatening arrest or insisting on payment through cash or gift cards. Authorities emphasize that no legitimate agency will demand payment this way or ask for sensitive information over the phone.
To avoid becoming a victim, officials recommend letting unknown numbers go to voicemail, not trusting caller ID, and hanging up immediately if threatened. “Pause. Think. Verify,” police advised in a safety message.
Law enforcement stressed that a few seconds of skepticism can save residents thousands of dollars. Anyone who believes they have been targeted should report the incident to local authorities.
