Naperville, Illinois – Nicor Gas is urging residents to call 811 before digging to prevent injuries and utility damage.

According to Nicor Gas, April marks Safe Digging Month in Illinois, as warmer weather brings an increase in home improvement and excavation projects. Officials are reminding homeowners and contractors that state law requires contacting 811 at least two business days before digging.

The free service allows utility companies to mark underground infrastructure, including natural gas lines, water systems, and communication cables. Yellow markings indicate natural gas lines.

Nicor Gas outlined its “Dig with C.A.R.E.” safety steps: call 811 or visit illinois1call.com before digging, allow time for utility markings, respect those markings by using hand tools nearby, and excavate carefully while keeping markings visible.

Customers are also required to pre-mark their intended digging area using white paint, flags, or chalk before submitting a request.

Officials emphasized that failing to locate underground lines can result in serious injuries, service disruptions, and costly property damage. If a gas line is struck or the smell of gas is detected, residents should leave the area immediately and call 911 or Nicor Gas’ emergency line.

Nicor Gas maintains more than 34,300 miles of natural gas infrastructure across northern Illinois, serving approximately 2.3 million customers in over 650 communities.

The reminder may be especially relevant for homeowners, contractors, and young workers taking on seasonal outdoor projects.
