Palos Park, IL – Authorities in Illinois are warning residents about a fraudulent Canadian insurance scam that falsely claims recipients are entitled to $11 million from a deceased relative who died of COVID-19.

According to the Palos Park Police Department (PPPD), scammers are sending letters impersonating a Canadian law firm, stating that the recipient is the sole heir to an unclaimed life insurance policy. The letter congratulates the recipient on the windfall and proposes a “partnership” where 10% of the money would go to charity, while the scammer keeps the rest.

Officials report an increase in these fraudulent letters appearing in Illinois mailboxes. The PPPD stresses that no such unclaimed policies exist and warns residents not to respond.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Ignore unexpected inheritance or insurance claims.
  • Do not share personal or financial information with unknown senders.
  • Verify legitimacy by contacting authorities or legal professionals.
  • Report suspicious letters to local law enforcement.

Police urge Illinois residents to stay vigilant and warn family and neighbors about this scam. If you receive a similar letter, contact the Palos Park Police Department immediately.
