Springfield, IL – State Rep. Anthony DeLuca (D-Chicago Heights) is joining colleagues from both parties in supporting House Resolution 494, a bipartisan measure condemning political violence and urging Illinois residents to embrace civility and respect in public discourse.
“Like many Americans, I’m alarmed by the violence we have witnessed in recent years,” DeLuca said in a statement Tuesday. “From Melissa Hortman to Charlie Kirk, it’s incredibly disheartening to see so many people willing to cheer on this violence as if it’s not real people getting hurt. It is time to end the nonstop political posturing and get back to work.”
The resolution cites a series of recent incidents nationwide involving assassination attempts, arson, and attacks on political figures across the ideological spectrum. It urges citizens and leaders alike to model civil, bipartisan dialogue and to refrain from language that promotes division or hostility.
“There have been far too many tragedies,” DeLuca added. “We’re Americans, and having differences of opinion is foundational to our identity. We must reject divisive, mean-spirited personal attack speech in both parties before things get even worse.”
DeLuca emphasized that the measure is not about politics, but about restoring respect and accountability to public debate.
