Gurnee, IL – A Gurnee man was taken into custody after allegedly attacking his 68-year-old mother during a domestic disturbance that led to a brief standoff Thursday evening.
According to the Gurnee Police Department, officers responded around 6 p.m. to the 400 block of North Hunt Club Road, where they found a woman with a head injury reportedly sustained after being struck with a metal pipe. She was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center and is expected to recover.
The suspect, identified as 45-year-old Maurice L. Freeman of Gurnee, initially refused to leave the apartment. Due to Freeman’s active warrant for Failure to Appear and a reported history of violence, the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) was called in for assistance. As a precaution, nearby residents were temporarily evacuated during the incident.
Authorities say negotiations were attempted through verbal commands and K-9 announcements before NIPAS entered the apartment and took Freeman into custody without further issue. He was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center for medical evaluation.
An arrest warrant is being prepared for Aggravated Domestic Battery, police said.
“The coordinated response from officers and partnering agencies helped resolve this situation safely and efficiently,” said Deputy Chief Jeremy Gaughan. “We are grateful that no additional injuries occurred.”
Assisting agencies included the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Libertyville PD, Lindenhurst PD, North Chicago PD, Round Lake Beach PD, Round Lake Park PD, and Round Lake PD.
The incident remains under investigation.
