Aurora, IL – With electric bikes, motorized scooters, and bicycles increasingly popular on Illinois roads, Aurora police issued a safety reminder to residents today, highlighting important rules and regulations riders must follow.
According to the Aurora Illinois Police Department, Class 3 e-bike riders must be at least 16 years old, while motorized scooter riders are required to be 18 or older. These motorized vehicles, including all e-bikes and scooters, are strictly prohibited from sidewalk use and must remain on roadways or designated bike lanes.
All motorized scooter and e-bike riders are subject to DUI laws, Aurora police emphasized. Riders must use front and rear lights when riding at night, and only one rider is permitted per scooter.
Additionally, the department advised all riders to keep at least one hand on handlebars at all times, specifically urging riders to never grab onto moving vehicles.
For bicycles, Aurora law states that only riders under 14 years old may ride on sidewalks. Riders 15 years and older must remain on roadways and follow standard traffic rules. Further, no bicycles are allowed on sidewalks within Aurora’s central business district.
Aurora police noted the increased speeds of Class 3 e-bikes, which can reach up to 28 mph. They stress that riders should treat these vehicles with the seriousness required of their speed capabilities.
Aurora authorities say enforcement is key to maintaining safety, urging all residents to be aware of these rules to avoid fines and accidents.
