Lombard, IL – A Lombard teenager was charged this week with attempted terrorism and unlawful possession of a firearm after allegedly plotting an attack targeting a local Islamic center, prompting swift condemnation from local law enforcement officials.
Following the revelations made public on Friday, Village of Lombard Police Chief Joe Grage issued a firm statement in response to the allegations, emphasizing the community’s values and denouncing hate-based violence.
“The Village of Lombard is a proudly diverse community,” Grage said in the statement Saturday. “The conduct alleged in this case is absolutely unacceptable and stands in direct opposition to our shared values. There is no place for hate or violence of any kind.”
According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, the 16-year-old male is accused of entering the Islamic Education Center in Glendale Heights on July 4 while allegedly recording video for the purpose of planning a targeted attack using an explosive device. Authorities also claim the minor possessed a concealed handgun during the incident.
The teen was charged with one count of Attempted Terrorism (Class 1 Felony) and one count of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm (Class 4 Felony), and was ordered detained following a detention hearing on Thursday. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 4.
In urging community vigilance, Chief Grage added, “We remain committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents, and urge anyone with concerns or information related to potential threats or hate-motivated behavior to contact the Police Department immediately.”
Officials from the FBI, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and DuPage County praised the collaborative efforts that led to the teen’s arrest, stating the action likely prevented a serious threat.
The juvenile is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
