Chicago, IL – An Illinois State Police (ISP) squad car was struck early Tuesday morning on I-94 near 63rd Street when an unknown driver sideswiped the vehicle and fled the scene, authorities said.

According to Illinois State Police, the incident occurred around 1:25 a.m. on November 25, 2025. A trooper had stopped on the right shoulder of I-94 southbound near the 63rd Street exit with emergency lights activated when a black SUV failed to move over and hit the rear passenger side of the marked squad car.

The trooper, who was inside the vehicle at the time, was not injured. The SUV driver continued southbound and remains unidentified as of Tuesday afternoon. ISP confirmed this marks the agency’s 14th “Move Over” law-related crash of 2025.

In comparison, ISP recorded 27 such crashes in 2024 and 21 in 2023. Officials continue urging motorists to obey Illinois’s “Move Over” or Scott’s Law, which requires drivers to slow down and switch lanes when approaching emergency or hazard vehicles stopped on the roadside.

Violating the Move Over law can result in fines from $250 to $10,000, and if an injury occurs, drivers may face license suspension and potential jail time.

The investigation into the hit-and-run remains ongoing.
