Joliet, IL – A 21-year-old pilot walked away without injury after making an emergency landing Thursday evening in a grassy area near the Inwood Golf Course in Joliet, authorities said.

According to the Joliet Police Department, officers responded at 5:14 p.m. to the area of McDonough Street and Infantry Drive after reports of a possible downed aircraft. They found a single-engine Piper PA-18 Super Cub that had landed following what the pilot described as an engine failure mid-flight.

The aircraft, which had been towing a promotional banner, was forced down near the golf course. Police said the pilot released the banner before landing, and it was later recovered in the 2600 block of West Jefferson Street.

Officials confirmed the incident caused minor damage to a section of fence owned by the Joliet Park District. No injuries were reported on the ground.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were notified of the landing and are expected to investigate the cause of the reported mechanical malfunction. Police remained at the scene for traffic control while emergency crews worked in the area.

Motorists in the vicinity were advised to drive carefully due to intermittent lane closures during the response.
