Braidwood, IL – Local residents will have the opportunity to engage directly with federal regulators as the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) hosts a public open house Wednesday to discuss the 2024 safety performance of the Braidwood Nuclear Generating Station.
The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday from 5 to 6 p.m. at Braidwood City Hall, 141 W. Main St. According to the NRC, staff responsible for plant inspections and oversight, including on-site resident inspectors, will be present to address any regulatory or technical questions from the public.
The NRC determined that Braidwood Station, operated by Constellation Energy, operated safely throughout 2024. All inspection findings and performance indicators were classified as green or of very low safety significance. As a result, the plant remains under the NRC’s baseline level of oversight, which includes thousands of inspection hours annually.
The NRC’s Reactor Oversight Process utilizes a color-coded system to assess plant performance. Indicators range from green, signifying low safety risk, to white, yellow, or red, indicating increasing levels of safety concern. Findings above very low safety significance automatically trigger increased NRC oversight.
Inspections at Braidwood Station are conducted by two resident NRC inspectors along with specialists from the agency’s Region III office in Naperville, Illinois.
The NRC’s annual assessment letter for Braidwood Station, as well as current performance information for both Unit 1 and Unit 2, is available on the NRC’s official website.
