Quincy, IL – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until midnight tonight for portions of west-central Illinois and northeast Missouri, where heavy snow and gusty winds continue to create hazardous travel conditions, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) St. Louis.
Forecasters expect an additional 5 to 8 inches of snow across the region today and this evening, with wind gusts up to 35 mph contributing to reduced visibility and blowing snow. The warning includes counties such as Adams, Brown, Pike, Greene, Macoupin, and Montgomery in Illinois, and Knox and Lewis in Missouri.
Communities including Quincy, Pittsfield, Mount Sterling, and Litchfield are likely to see rapidly accumulating snow throughout the day. NWS cautions that the snow may accumulate so quickly that travel becomes very difficult to impossible, especially along rural highways and secondary roads.
Road conditions are expected to worsen this afternoon and evening as snowfall intensifies. Bridges and overpasses will become slick first, but all untreated surfaces are likely to be hazardous. Officials urge drivers to avoid travel if possible.
If travel is unavoidable, residents are encouraged to pack emergency supplies—such as food, water, blankets, a flashlight, and a shovel—in case of becoming stranded. Road condition updates are available at GettingAroundIllinois.com in Illinois and traveler.modot.org/map or 1-888-275-6636 in Missouri.
Snow will taper off around midnight, but lingering slick spots may persist into early Sunday.
