St. Louis, Missouri –Air in St. Louis and much of central Missouri turns dangerous today as the heat index climbs to 106° through 7 p.m., forcing officials to issue an urgent heat advisory and warn of serious health risks for anyone outdoors.
According to the National Weather Service, the advisory covers key cities including St. Louis, Columbia, Jefferson City, Farmington, and extends into south-central and southwest Illinois, impacting communities like Litchfield, Vandalia, and Jerseyville. The advisory is in place until 7 p.m. Wednesday, with heat and humidity peaking this afternoon across major interstates including I-70, I-55, and I-64.
Officials urge residents to stay indoors when possible, drink plenty of fluids, and check on vulnerable neighbors and relatives. Children, pets, and outdoor workers are especially at risk for heat-related illnesses. Outdoor activities should be rescheduled to morning or evening hours, and frequent rest breaks are recommended for those who must be outside. Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and air conditioning are essential.
Schools, community centers, and local governments are opening cooling centers. Today’s advisory marks one of the hottest days of the summer so far for the region—similar to the 2022 late-July heatwave, when multiple heat emergencies were reported.
Heat advisories remain in effect until 7 p.m., with additional alerts possible if conditions persist. Stay tuned for updates and limit time outdoors until temperatures subside tonight.
