Cape Girardeau, MO – Fire danger is critically elevated across southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois Friday as gusty winds and dry conditions prompt a Red Flag Warning. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged due to the rapid potential for fire spread.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, the warning remains in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. CDT for counties including Perry, Bollinger, and Cape Girardeau in Missouri, as well as Perry, Jackson, and Williamson in Illinois. Southwest winds between 15 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph in Illinois, are expected to combine with humidity levels as low as 19 percent in Missouri and 23 percent in Illinois.

Fuel moisture levels—known as 10-hour fuels—are as low as 6 percent, increasing the likelihood that any fires could become uncontrollable.

Local emergency officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, secure flammable materials, and remain alert for fire activity. The conditions are consistent with historical spring fire weather patterns in the region, though wind speeds are on the higher end for March.

Residents in rural areas should especially remain vigilant, as open fields and dry vegetation could quickly ignite under current conditions. Fire departments are on standby for rapid response if needed.
