St. Louis, Missouri – Severe thunderstorms could hammer eastern and central Missouri Monday afternoon into evening, bringing a high risk of damaging winds, very large hail, and possible tornadoes, especially near the I-70 corridor.

According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 out of 5) is in place for much of the state on Monday, May 19, with storms likely developing after 2 p.m. and intensifying through the evening. All hazards are on the table, including torrential rain that could trigger localized flash flooding.

Cities under the enhanced threat include St. Louis, Columbia, Jefferson City, and Rolla. Metro East areas like Belleville and Edwardsville in Illinois also face a strong chance of severe weather. High winds could bring down trees and powerlines, while hailstones may reach golf-ball size or larger.

Drivers should avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours and secure outdoor items. Charge phones and prepare emergency kits in case of power outages. Tornado warnings could be issued quickly with fast-moving cells.

The severe threat is expected to diminish by midnight, but additional watches or warnings may be issued as conditions evolve Monday afternoon.
