Lake County, IL – A North Chicago man was arrested after authorities alleged he operated a methamphetamine distribution ring out of a home that also served as a daycare, raising serious concerns about child safety in the community.

According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, detectives with the Special Investigations Group (SIG), a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) task force, launched an investigation into Delwin L. Hodge, 27, after learning he was allegedly selling meth from his Wright Avenue residence. Undercover detectives reportedly purchased over 200 grams of methamphetamine from Hodge before obtaining a search warrant for the property, which was executed by SIG and SWAT officers on Thursday, July 31, 2025.

Officials said the search revealed not only packaging materials for narcotics and a firearm, but also that the home was being used to provide daycare services. Authorities noted that the unsecured firearm and evidence of methamphetamine activity posed a direct risk to children present for daycare. Investigators allege some drugs were flushed down a toilet just as SWAT entered. The Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) was notified due to the potential endangerment of minors.

Detectives charged Hodge with three counts of unlawful possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute (Class X Felonies), two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance (Class 1 Felonies), unlawful possession of a controlled substance (Class 4 Felony), and endangering the life/welfare of a child (Misdemeanor). As Hodge was on parole, the Illinois Department of Corrections also issued a parole violation warrant, according to authorities.

Lake County Sheriff John D. Idleburg called the alleged operation “absolutely unacceptable,” emphasizing the dangers posed by drug activity in a setting intended for children. Hodge remains held pending an initial court hearing, as prosecutors seek his detention during trial.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
