Chicago, IL – Today marks 110 years since one of Illinois’ most devastating disasters, as the city remembers the SS Eastland tragedy that claimed hundreds of lives on the Chicago River. The centennial-plus-ten anniversary draws renewed attention to a catastrophe that deeply impacted families across the Chicago region, especially in the Cicero and Berwyn communities.

According to historical accounts, the morning of July 24, 1915, began with anticipation and celebration for more than 2,500 Western Electric employees and their families. The group had gathered at the Clark Street Bridge for a company picnic, boarding the SS Eastland for a day of fun. Moments before departure, the vessel unexpectedly rolled onto its side while still docked, trapping hundreds of men, women, and children below decks.

Rescue efforts, led by the nearby tugboat Kenosha, began almost immediately. According to the Chicago Historical Society, the Kenosha crew used their boat as a makeshift bridge, aiding frantic passengers as they sought safety onshore. Despite their efforts, the scale of the disaster quickly became clear. Many victims, unable to escape, were allegedly crushed under heavy furniture or drowned as the river waters flooded the overturned ship.

The final death toll reached 844, making it the single greatest loss of life from a shipwreck in Great Lakes history. Twenty-two entire families were reportedly lost, and the event sent shockwaves through neighborhoods for generations. The tragedy prompted sweeping changes to maritime safety laws and left a lasting legacy on the city.

After the disaster, the SS Eastland was salvaged and sold to the United States Navy. Renamed USS Wilmette, she served as a training vessel before being scrapped after World War II.

As Chicago reflects on this day, the SS Eastland tragedy remains a powerful reminder of the importance of safety and community resilience in Illinois history.
