St. Charles, IL – A Des Plaines man was sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to possessing cocaine with intent to deliver, authorities announced this week.

According to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, Andrew M. Guca entered a guilty plea on May 8 to one count of Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Deliver, a Class X felony. On Tuesday, Judge Barsanti handed down the 20-year sentence, which will be served in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Prosecutors said the case stemmed from a traffic stop in Aurora on June 6, 2023. During the stop, Aurora police searched Guca’s vehicle and discovered approximately 4,000 grams of cocaine in the rear cargo area. The drugs carried an estimated street value between $120,000 and $144,000.

Under Illinois law, Guca is required to serve at least 75 percent of his sentence. He will receive credit for 153 days already served in the Kane County jail.

Assistant State’s Attorney Jake G. Matekaitis said the defendant had intended to deliver a “very large amount of cocaine.” He credited the Aurora Police Department, specifically Officer Garcia, for intercepting the delivery before it reached the street.

“This sentence should serve as a strong deterrent for anyone who might consider peddling dangerous drugs for their own financial benefit,” Matekaitis said. “They will be caught and we will hold them accountable.”

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office also acknowledged Assistant State’s Attorney Ryan Merkel for his work on the case.
