Jefferson County, IL – An 83-year-old man was killed Wednesday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle while standing in his yard in rural Jefferson County, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said they responded at about 2:30 p.m. to a home at 16763 N. Casey Pike Lane, where they found Charles Cimera unresponsive with severe injuries. Cimera was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jefferson County Coroner.

According to investigators, 75-year-old Veena K. Gupta of Mt. Vernon was driving a 2009 Mercedes when she allegedly drove off Casey Pike Lane, striking Cimera before hitting a tree and stopping in a neighboring yard. Authorities cited Gupta for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and said she was issued a mandatory court appearance.

The Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit assisted sheriff’s detectives at the scene as the investigation continues.

Family members of Charles Cimera asked the public for privacy while they process the sudden loss. “They respectfully ask members of the public wishing to reach out to them to express condolences to give them a few days while they are processing it,” the release stated.
