Springfield, IL – A Chicago man is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly shooting an Illinois State Police trooper during a traffic stop in Springfield.

According to the Illinois State Police, the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office filed charges against 37-year-old Cristobal Santana, including two counts of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm to a police officer, aggravated battery to a police officer, and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

Authorities said the incident happened Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 10:47 p.m. when Trooper Dakotah Chapman-Green stopped Santana on Toronto Road in Springfield. During the stop, gunfire was exchanged and Chapman-Green was struck in the leg. Santana allegedly fled the scene but was taken into custody just after 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 25.

Trooper Chapman-Green was hospitalized following the shooting and remains under medical care. Santana was also hospitalized for injuries reportedly sustained during his apprehension. Both men remain in stable condition, officials confirmed.

Illinois State Police Director Brendan F. Kelly later thanked the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office and jurors for their work in the case. In a statement, he commended Chapman-Green for returning to full duty after surviving the attack, noting the sacrifice and dedication of officers who face danger in protecting the public.

The investigation is ongoing, and ISP said it will continue working with the State’s Attorney’s Office to provide updates as new information becomes available.

The public is reminded that all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
